Using mobile data in Taiwan: local tips

  • 5G in towns, 4G in the hills. Taiwan Mobile reports 5G coverage for about 98% of the population, so cities and towns are well covered. Mountain and remote areas can still fall back to 4G.
  • Tap your card on the Taipei MRT. Since July 2026, Taipei MRT gates have accepted foreign contactless Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay — no EasyCard needed.
  • High-speed rail tickets in the app. Taiwan High Speed Rail’s official T Express app has an English interface and sells mobile tickets with QR codes to scan at the gate.
  • YouBike with a credit card. Visitors can rent YouBike 2.0 bikes through “Single Rental” in the official app with a credit card and email verification — unlocking by QR code needs data.
  • iTaiwan free Wi-Fi. The government’s iTaiwan network has over 5,000 indoor hotspots, mostly available during office hours (railway stations and highway rest areas run 24 hours). Make sure you are joining the genuine iTaiwan network.
  • Hiking high mountains. Carriers have added coverage points along Yushan’s main trails, but weather and terrain still cut signal. For emergencies, dial 112.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change — check the app or operator before you travel.
