Using mobile data in Switzerland: local tips

  • Use a 4G/5G phone. Almost everyone in Switzerland is covered by 4G, and Sunrise switched off 3G in 2025 — older 3G-only phones may not connect. Figures count people, so remote Alpine spots can still have gaps.
  • EasyRide needs data the whole trip. SBB’s EasyRide ticketing needs working mobile data, GPS and Bluetooth from check-in until check-out — if data can’t be sent, you may not hold a valid ticket.
  • Swiss Travel Pass in the app. A Swiss Travel Pass appears in the SBB Mobile app only if you bought it from SBB while logged in; passes from other sellers won’t show there.
  • Station Wi-Fi, not train Wi-Fi. Free “SBB-FREE” Wi-Fi is available at about 80 stations, but SBB’s on-train FreeSurf works only with SIMs from certain Swiss providers — plan to use your own data on board.
  • Mountain rescue. The Rega app sends your location to air rescue but needs at least minimal coverage. Rega’s emergency number is 1414 (+41 333 333 333 from abroad); where reception is poor, try 112.
  • Weather and avalanche warnings. The free MeteoSwiss app from the federal weather office can send official storm, flood and avalanche alerts for your chosen locations.
