Using mobile data in Norway: local tips

  • Plan everything in Entur. Entur is Norway’s official national journey planner: routes, timetables and tickets for almost all public transport, including regional trains, buses and fjord ferries.
  • Mountains have dead zones. Some mountain areas have little or no reception, but keep your phone with you — its signal can help rescuers find you. Emergency numbers are 110 (fire), 112 (police) and 113 (ambulance).
  • Hjelp 113 shows your position. The Norwegian Air Ambulance’s free Hjelp 113 app lists the emergency numbers and shows your coordinates, so you can read them out if the emergency centre hasn’t received your position.
  • Yr and Varsom before you hike. Check the forecast on Yr and hazard warnings on Varsom before heading out. The Varsom app covers avalanche, flood and landslide warnings, and its maps can be downloaded for offline use.
  • Vipps is for locals. Norway’s popular Vipps payment app needs a Norwegian ID number, phone number and bank account, so visitors can’t sign up — pay by card or phone wallet instead.
  • Buy Oslo tickets before boarding. In Oslo, the Ruter app sells public transport tickets and shows vehicles on a live map. Buy your ticket before you board.
