Using mobile data in Nigeria: local tips

  • Dial 112 in an emergency. Nigeria’s toll-free 112 line covers ambulance, fire and police around the clock. There’s no national ambulance service, so know how you’d get to a hospital.
  • Check coverage before you go. MTN Nigeria runs an online coverage locator. Check it for your accommodation and planned stops, particularly outside the big cities.
  • Fill in landing cards online. Foreign visitors complete landing and departure cards on the Nigeria Immigration Service’s online portal before entry and exit. Keep the confirmation handy, as you may be asked for it at the border.
  • Cowry card or app. If you pay for transport with Cowry, note that the app works only online, while the Cowry card also works offline – useful where signal is weak.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change — check the app or operator before you travel.
