Using mobile data in Gambia: local tips

  • 5G is very limited. Africell’s 5G covers only a handful of spots around Banjul, Kairaba Avenue, Senegambia and Brusubi. Elsewhere, don’t count on 5G.
  • Heading upriver. Signal is best around Greater Banjul and the coastal resorts; rural areas inland are noticeably weaker. Download offline maps and bookings before leaving the coast.
  • Nationwide outages happen. Most international traffic runs over a single subsea cable, and failures or power cuts at the cable station have caused nationwide internet outages lasting hours. Keep key documents saved offline.
  • Carry a power bank. The UK government warns that power cuts can disrupt communications and advises carrying a power bank with spare cables and noting emergency contacts in advance.
  • Cash still rules. The Gambia is mainly a cash economy with few ATMs outside the Senegambia area, so don’t rely on paying by phone upcountry.
