Using mobile data in Kenya: local tips

  • eTA only through official channels. Kenya’s eTA must be completed on the official etakenya.go.ke website or the official “Kenya Travel Authorisation” app, and processing usually takes about three business days.
  • M-Pesa needs a Safaricom SIM. Visitors can register for M-Pesa with a passport, but Safaricom requires a Safaricom SIM card, registered at an M-Pesa agent or Safaricom shop.
  • SGR trains don’t take cards. Kenya Railways says Madaraka Express tickets can’t be paid by credit or debit card, and asks passengers to reach the station 60 minutes before departure.
  • Park fees through eCitizen. Kenya Wildlife Service parks take entry payments only through the eCitizen platform — sort it out online before you reach the gate.
  • Emergency number. Call 999 for ambulance, fire or police in Kenya.
