Using mobile data in Iceland: local tips
- Check your phone before you fly. Iceland has been switching off its 2G and 3G networks, and Safetravel advises checking that your phone works before arrival because it can affect 112 calls. If 112 fails, call +354 599 0112.
- Canyons and valleys drop signal. Coverage along the coast is generally good, but narrow canyons and deep valleys can lose signal — move to higher ground. In the highlands, a text message often gets through when a call won’t.
- Install the SafeTravel app. The official SafeTravel app can send your GPS location to 112 in an emergency and shows current road and weather conditions — set it up before you head out.
- Road conditions on umferdin.is. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration posts road and weather conditions on umferdin.is, in English too. Check before setting off and again on long drives when the weather changes.
- Buses without a local number. Capital-area Strætó buses take contactless payment, and the Klappið app sells fares and tracks buses live. You can log in anonymously instead of with a phone number.
- Keflavík Wi-Fi has no time limit. At Keflavík Airport, connect to “KEF - FreeWiFi”: it is free with no time limit and needs no registration or password.
