What can I still do in Germany after using up my 1GB high-speed data allowance?

1GB high-speed data ≈ 3.3 hours of 360p video or 0.9 hours of 720p HD video (estimated using YouTube’s recommended bitrates). Once exhausted, speeds will be reduced to 512 Kbps – 1 Mbps (depending on the number of days you select) until your daily allowance resets:

  • Message WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger
  • Email and Google Maps navigation
  • Voice calls via apps
  • Watch videos and scroll Reels/TikTok (very slow downloads)
  • Video calls
  • HD video streaming, large file downloads, and hotspot sharing with a laptop

The list above shows the lowest available rate (512 Kbps) to avoid surprises.

7 days in Germany: Unlimited or data package?

If your average daily usage is under 1 GB, the 10GB plan is cheaper ($8.49 vs. $12.49). Choose Unlimited if you’d rather not monitor your data: heavy usage on any day won’t disconnect you.

Using mobile data in Germany: local tips

  • 5G covers most, not all. O2 and Vodafone each covered about three-quarters of Germany’s land area with 5G in late 2025. Expect 4G in rural stretches.
  • Check the official coverage map. Before a rural drive or hike, check the Bundesnetzagentur’s coverage map. It shows 4G and 5G separately for O2 and Vodafone, including dead spots.
  • On ICE trains. Train windows block a lot of signal, so Deutsche Bahn fits repeaters in all ICE trains. Free WIFIonICE shares its bandwidth among passengers, so performance varies and large downloads are discouraged.
  • Berlin’s U-Bahn is covered. All nine Berlin U-Bahn lines and their 175 stations have 4G in the tunnels as well as on platforms.
  • Deutschlandticket is a subscription. The Deutschlandticket is a digital monthly subscription that renews automatically — cancel by the 10th of the month if you don’t want the next month. It covers local and regional transport, not ICE, IC or EC trains.
  • Carry some cash. In 2025 cash was still used for 45% of purchases in Germany, and card or phone payment wasn’t possible for about one in seven in-store purchases.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change — check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQs about Germany eSIM

Everything you need to stay connected on your trip.

Unlimited data: your connection will never be cut off. However, high-speed data is limited to 1GB per day; once exhausted, speeds will be reduced until your daily allowance resets. Post-threshold speed in Germany: 512 Kbps – 1 Mbps (depending on the number of days you select).

Connects via O2 (Telefónica), Vodafone. Your device automatically selects the strongest available local carrier — no manual selection needed. 5G is available where the local carrier has deployed it; elsewhere, 4G applies.

At 512 Kbps these still work: Message WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger, Email and Google Maps navigation, Voice calls via apps. Not recommended: Watch videos and scroll Reels/TikTok (very slow downloads), Video calls, HD video streaming, large file downloads, and hotspot sharing with a laptop.

Unlimited (1GB/day high-speed data) starting at $1.20/day is enough for maps, messaging, and social media. Unlimited Plus (3GB/day) starting at $2.15/day is better if you frequently make video calls, post stories/videos, or share a hotspot with travel companions.

Yes. Note that hotspot usage counts toward your plan’s high-speed data allowance — a single laptop can quickly consume 1GB, and carriers may throttle speeds when hotspotting. For group sharing, we recommend Unlimited Plus or Premium.

The number of days starts when your eSIM first connects to mobile data at your destination — not from the purchase date. We recommend installing your eSIM before departure and only enabling it upon landing.

Most iPhone XS+, Galaxy S20+, and Pixel 3+ models support eSIM. Your device must be unlocked.

No. This is a data-only plan; you’ll make calls and send messages via WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger.
