Using mobile data in Bhutan: local tips

  • Set up goBoB before you fly. Bank of Bhutan’s goBoB wallet lets visitors register and load funds by card before arriving. Payments only work once your identity check with the Department of Immigration is complete.
  • Cards work mainly in towns. International cards are widely accepted in urban areas but may not work elsewhere. Some monument entry fees can be paid in cash or through the goBoB app.
  • Hotel Wi-Fi is common. Most hotels in Bhutan have Wi-Fi, handy for larger downloads before a day on the road.
  • Register your phone at customs. On arrival you must register laptops, mobile phones and cameras with the Department of Revenue and Customs, and they are checked again when you leave.
  • Emergency numbers by service. Dial 112 for an ambulance, 110 for fire and 113 for police.
