Using mobile data in Austria: local tips

  • ÖBB tickets without an account. The ÖBB app sells train, bus and city transport tickets and shows live connections. ÖBB says you don’t need an account to buy — it only speeds up checkout.
  • Train Wi-Fi follows the signal. Railjet and Cityjet trains have free Wi-Fi, but ÖBB notes it depends on mobile coverage along the route and is not always seamless — download anything essential before boarding.
  • Buy Vienna tickets before boarding. WienMobil sells Wiener Linien tickets and shows live times, but mobile tickets must be bought before you travel — Wiener Linien treats no signal or a flat battery as the passenger’s problem.
  • Free Wi-Fi around Vienna. Vienna runs around 400 free Wi-Fi hotspots across the city, about 40 of them in the historic 1st district.
  • Digital vignette in the ASFINAG app. The motorway operator’s free app shows traffic, road works and live webcams, and sells the digital motorway vignette and route tolls.
  • Mountain rescue is 140. In the mountains, call 140 for mountain rescue or 112 for any emergency. 112 also works from a locked phone without entering a PIN.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change — check the app or operator before you travel.
