It depends on the line. When Rome's public services watchdog ACoS checked in February 2026, 5G coverage was complete on Line A, live on Line B only between Bologna and Jonio with the rest still being installed, and not yet started on Line C. Switzerland and San Marino are outside the EU, so EU roaming rules don't apply there, and an Italy-only plan may not work on their networks. If you're staying close to the border, switch off automatic network selection and pick an Italian network manually.

EU rules say satellite services aren't covered by normal roaming terms and can be charged separately. On longer crossings, keep an eye on which network your phone shows, or turn on flight mode and use the ship's Wi-Fi.
Fiumicino has free Wi-Fi with no time limit: choose the "Airport Free Wi-Fi" network and pick the free profile on the welcome page, which is handy for installing your eSIM on arrival. In the city it's harder, because registration for Rome's Digit Roma public Wi-Fi currently needs an Italian SIM. The national wifi.italia.it app is an alternative that connects you to participating hotspots.
