Using mobile data in Italy: local tips

  • Tap to ride in Rome. Tap a contactless card or phone wallet at Rome’s metro gates and on buses and trams: use the same card or device for every tap within the 100-minute ticket window.
  • Tap in and out in Milan. On Milan’s metro, tap in and out with the same card or phone; fares are capped at the daily rate. It doesn’t work on S suburban lines or other rail services.
  • Italo Wi-Fi needs a phone number. Italo’s free onboard Wi-Fi asks for an email address and a mobile number to log in: keep your home number handy, as this eSIM has none.
  • 5G covers people more than places. 5G reaches most of Italy’s population but a much smaller share of its land. Expect 4G in rural and mountain areas.
  • Check the official coverage map. Before hiking in the Dolomites or visiting islands, check the regulator AGCOM’s broadband map, which shows 2G to 5G coverage down to small areas.
  • Install the 112 app. Italy’s official emergency app, “Where ARE U”, sends your location to 112 over mobile data, or by SMS when there is no data. Install it before mountain trips.
  • Book the Vatican on the official site. The Vatican Museums’ only official ticket website is tickets.museivaticani.va, and the museums warn about scam sites. Tickets are valid only on the date booked.

FAQ

It depends on the line. When Rome's public services watchdog ACoS checked in February 2026, 5G coverage was complete on Line A, live on Line B only between Bologna and Jonio with the rest still being installed, and not yet started on Line C. On Line A you can keep browsing between stations; on B and C, load your maps and tickets before you go underground.

Yes, near the border your phone can grab a stronger Swiss signal without you noticing, for example around Chiasso by Lake Como. Switzerland and San Marino are outside the EU, so EU roaming rules don't apply there, and an Italy-only plan may not work on their networks. If you're staying close to the border, switch off automatic network selection and pick an Italian network manually.

Near the coast your phone stays on land-based Italian networks, but further out at sea many ships switch you to an onboard network delivered by satellite. EU rules say satellite services aren't covered by normal roaming terms and can be charged separately. On longer crossings, keep an eye on which network your phone shows, or turn on flight mode and use the ship's Wi-Fi.

Fiumicino has free Wi-Fi with no time limit: choose the "Airport Free Wi-Fi" network and pick the free profile on the welcome page, which is handy for installing your eSIM on arrival. In the city it's harder, because registration for Rome's Digit Roma public Wi-Fi currently needs an Italian SIM. The national wifi.italia.it app is an alternative that connects you to participating hotspots.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.
