7 days in Japan: Unlimited or data package?

Unlimited costs the same as the 10GB plan ($8.99) but never runs out — for a trip of 7 days, Unlimited is the clear winner.

Using mobile data in Japan: local tips

  • Signal underground. Tokyo’s subway lines carry mobile voice and data in the tunnels as well as the stations, so maps and messaging keep working between stops.
  • Shinkansen Wi-Fi is limited. Free Wi-Fi on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen disconnects every 30 minutes and can be slow in crowded or remote sections — use mobile data for anything that needs a steady connection.
  • Free Wi-Fi is fragmented. Wi-Fi sign-up varies between stations, airports and convenience stores, and some sign-up pages are in Japanese only. JNTO’s free “Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect” app registers you once for many trusted networks.
  • 5G comes and goes. In the first half of 2026, phones on Japan’s four networks spent roughly 37–51% of their connected time on 5G. Expect to switch to 4G often, especially outside city centres.
  • Transit card on your phone. iPhone users can add JR East’s Welcome Suica Mobile to Apple Wallet and top it up from the phone; it is valid for 180 days. It is not available on Android.
  • Translate offline too. Download Japanese in Google Translate on Wi-Fi before you fly, so menus and signs can still be translated in deep tunnels or remote areas without signal.

FAQs about Japan eSIM

Everything you need to stay connected on your trip.

Yes. The Premium plan has no daily high-speed data cap — you’ll enjoy full network speeds throughout your plan’s validity. Actual speeds still depend on local signal strength.

Connects via NTT Docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank, Rakuten Mobile. Your device automatically selects the strongest available local carrier — no manual selection needed. 5G is available where the local carrier has deployed it; elsewhere, 4G applies.

Unlimited (1GB/day high-speed data) starting at $0.92/day is enough for maps, messaging, and social media. Unlimited Plus (3GB/day) starting at $1.48/day is better if you frequently make video calls, post stories/videos, or share a hotspot with travel companions. Choose Premium starting at $1.77/day if you need all-day high-speed data without limits — ideal for remote work or sharing a hotspot with your laptop.

Yes. Note that hotspot usage counts toward your plan’s high-speed data allowance — a single laptop can quickly consume 1GB, and carriers may throttle speeds when hotspotting. For group sharing, we recommend Unlimited Plus or Premium.

The number of days starts when your eSIM first connects to mobile data at your destination — not from the purchase date. We recommend installing your eSIM before departure and only enabling it upon landing.

Most iPhone XS+, Galaxy S20+, and Pixel 3+ models support eSIM. Your device must be unlocked.

No. This is a data-only plan; you’ll make calls and send messages via WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger.

100% refund if the eSIM hasn’t been activated or if there’s a technical issue caused by us that we cannot resolve.
