Vietnamese carriers stopped broadcasting 2G nationwide from 15 September 2026, apart from a few offshore areas. During the transition, 2G was partly kept to carry international roaming calls, so phones that relied on it may lose normal calls and SMS. If you plan to keep your home SIM for calls or bank codes, ask your home carrier whether its Vietnam roaming supports 4G calling (VoLTE). Mobile data on 4G and 5G is not affected.
SIMs and eSIMs sold by Vietnamese carriers must be registered to a passport that stays valid for your permitted stay, under Decree 163/2024/ND-CP. Buy from an official carrier store and bring the passport you entered Vietnam with.
