Using mobile data in Vietnam: local tips

  • 5G in cities, 4G beyond. Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone all run commercial 5G, and Viettel reports 5G in every province. Outside city centres, expect your phone to use 4G.
  • Ha Long Bay has dead zones. Limestone islands block signal in parts of the bay, and tour boats still lose coverage in some areas. Download tickets and maps before boarding.
  • Trekking in the far north. Almost every village now has mobile signal, but a few remote hamlets in the northern mountains still do not: carry offline maps on trekking and loop routes.
  • Zalo needs SMS verification. Many hotels and small businesses use Zalo. Signing up requires a code sent by SMS, so keep a SIM that can receive texts. This data-only eSIM has no number.
  • Paying by QR code. Visitors from China, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia can scan Vietnamese QR codes with some home banking or wallet apps.
  • Offline translation. Download Vietnamese in Google Translate before you travel so menus and signs can be translated where there is no signal.

FAQ

Vietnamese carriers stopped broadcasting 2G nationwide from 15 September 2026, apart from a few offshore areas. During the transition, 2G was partly kept to carry international roaming calls, so phones that relied on it may lose normal calls and SMS. If you plan to keep your home SIM for calls or bank codes, ask your home carrier whether its Vietnam roaming supports 4G calling (VoLTE). Mobile data on 4G and 5G is not affected.

SIMs and eSIMs sold by Vietnamese carriers must be registered to a passport that stays valid for your permitted stay, under Decree 163/2024/ND-CP. Since 15 April 2026, Circular 08/2026/TT-BKHCN also requires carriers to verify a foreign customer's ID number, name, date of birth and face photo against the national immigration database, mainly by electronic checks. Buy from an official carrier store and bring the passport you entered Vietnam with.

In Ho Chi Minh City, yes. Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien) has fare gates that accept contactless cards issued abroad, phones and wearables, and Apple Pay Express Mode has worked there since March 2026. More than 120 city bus routes also take bank cards. In Hanoi, the Cat Linh to Ha Dong line sells single tickets in the Ha Noi Metro App, which shows a QR code to scan at the gate, so keep data on at the station.

Vietnam's official tourism site advises having a Vietnamese SIM card to use ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Be in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. A data-only eSIM gives you internet but no number for verification texts. If you already use one of these apps, sign in and check it works before you fly, and keep your home SIM able to receive texts. Otherwise, ask your hotel to call a taxi for you.
