Using mobile data in Thailand: local tips

  • dtac and TrueMove H share one network. True and dtac merged their towers and spectrum in October 2025, so whichever brand your phone shows, it runs on the same network.
  • 5G where people are. AIS says its 5G reaches about 95% of Thailand’s population. Speeds still vary with crowds and your phone.
  • Before island hopping. 5G has been extended along both the Gulf and Andaman coasts, but coverage on individual islands isn’t guaranteed: download maps and boat tickets before you set off.
  • Ride-hailing with a foreign card. Grab in Thailand accepts credit and debit cards as well as cash. Bolt also operates in Bangkok and at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai airports.
  • Pay by Thai QR code. Visitors whose banking apps are linked to Thai PromptPay (including from Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Hong Kong) can scan Thai QR codes directly. Most Western banking apps are not linked yet.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

Thailand has set up a Cell Broadcast alert system with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. It pushes pop-up alerts with sound to phones in an affected area, with no app or sign-up, and messages can go out in Thai, English, Chinese, Japanese and Russian. After the 2025 tests, True advised updating to Android 11 or later or iOS 18 or later, so update your phone and keep emergency alerts switched on.

Save 1155, the Tourist Police hotline, which has interpreters for languages beyond Thai and English. The free Thailand Tourist Police app, for iOS, Android and Huawei, has an SOS button that connects you to 1155 or to the nearest officers by GPS, plus live chat in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Russian. TAT says the app does not need a Thai SIM, so it works on a data-only eSIM, while a normal call to 1155 needs a SIM with a number.

At the main spots, yes, if your eSIM connects through True or dtac, which share one network. In February 2026 True switched on 5G at three points in Maya Bay: Loh Samah Bay pier, the national park office and the beach. In August 2026 it extended 5G from Surat Thani Airport along the ferry route to Koh Phangan, including Thong Sala, Haad Rin Beach and Mae Haad Beach. Coverage elsewhere on these islands isn't listed.

Mainly your passport. Under NBTC rules updated in May 2026, foreigners register SIMs face to face at a carrier branch or authorised dealer and can hold up to three SIMs per carrier. A newly registered SIM has to be activated within 60 days, otherwise you must verify your identity in person again. Carriers' verification systems need NBTC approval, so buy from an official shop rather than a street stall.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.
