Using mobile data in Spain: local tips

  • 5G reaches almost everyone. Spain’s 2025 coverage report puts 5G at over 99% of the population, including 96% of rural residents. Figures count people, not land, so remote mountains can still have gaps.
  • On the AVE. Mobile data is most continuous on the Madrid–Barcelona and Madrid–Seville high-speed lines; northern routes towards Galicia and Asturias have more weak spots.
  • PlayRenfe Wi-Fi. Renfe’s free PlayRenfe Wi-Fi is on all AVE and Avlo trains and most long-distance services: log in with your ticket number.
  • Load your train ticket early. Renfe accepts tickets shown on your phone in Wallet or the Renfe Ticket app. Open your ticket before reaching the boarding gate, which closes two minutes before departure.
  • Tap to ride in Madrid. Since June 2026 you can tap a contactless card, phone or watch at Madrid Metro turnstiles at every station, no ticket needed.
  • Contactless is limited on Barcelona’s metro. In Barcelona, contactless cards and phones work on buses but only at selected metro stations: tap once per traveller.
  • Alhambra tickets need ID. You can show your Alhambra QR ticket on your phone, but you also need original ID, and a missed Nasrid Palaces time slot is forfeited.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

Yes. Madrid's metro has a shared mobile network with radiating cable along the tunnels, so you get signal on platforms, stairs, lifts and inside the trains. Underground it has mostly been 4G: 5G only arrived in January 2026, starting at Sol station, and operators are adding more stations during 2026. You can check routes or message friends between stops without waiting to surface.

Spain's airport operator Aena runs free Wi-Fi called "AENA Airport Free Wi-Fi". You can sign in as a guest with just an email address, but you must verify that email within 60 minutes, so open the confirmation link quickly. Each device has to go through the portal separately. If the login page doesn't appear, open freewifi.aena.es in your browser.

Probably not. Bizum, the instant payment app most Spaniards use to split bills, requires an account at a Spanish bank with a Spanish IBAN and a Spanish mobile number linked to that bank. A travel eSIM won't give you that. When friends or small sellers ask for Bizum, offer card, cash or an international transfer app instead.

Not automatically. Andorra isn't covered by EU roaming rules, so check whether your plan lists it before driving up from Barcelona. On ferries, your phone keeps Spanish signal near the coast, but at sea some ships switch you to a satellite network that falls outside normal roaming terms. Watch which network your phone shows, or use flight mode and the ship's Wi-Fi.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.

Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.

Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.

eSIM plans for Spain connect via Orange, Movistar. Your device automatically selects the strongest local network; 5G is available where supported by the carrier, otherwise 4G/LTE applies. The specific carrier for each plan is listed on its detail page.

High-speed data is prioritized; after your daily allowance is used, speeds are reduced but remain sufficient for messaging, maps, and social media. You’ll never lose connectivity.

This data eSIM doesn’t include a phone number. You can still make calls and send messages normally using apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger.
