Using mobile data in New Zealand: local tips

  • Little coverage in the outdoors. The NZ Mountain Safety Council says most outdoor regions have no mobile service, and coverage elsewhere is patchy. Carry a personal locator beacon (they can be hired) and tell someone your plans.
  • Milford Road. Coverage is limited once you leave Te Anau, so load maps and bookings there. Along the road there are only card-phones and an emergency satellite phone at Homer Tunnel.
  • Great Walks can be offline. The Milford Track has no cellphone coverage at all. DOC advises carrying a distress beacon and your booking confirmation.
  • 3G-only phones no longer connect. One NZ switched off 2G and 3G in March 2026, so phones that only support 3G can no longer use its network.
  • 5G in the main centres. One NZ 5G is live in parts of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and other centres; most rural areas are 4G.
  • Pay by card on Auckland transport. Auckland buses, trains and most ferries accept contactless cards and phone wallets: tag on and off. Cards issued overseas may incur a small fee.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.
