Using mobile data in Japan: local tips

  • Signal underground. Tokyo’s subway lines carry mobile voice and data in the tunnels as well as the stations, so maps and messaging keep working between stops.
  • Shinkansen Wi-Fi is limited. Free Wi-Fi on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen disconnects every 30 minutes and can be slow in crowded or remote sections: use mobile data for anything that needs a steady connection.
  • Free Wi-Fi is fragmented. Wi-Fi sign-up varies between stations, airports and convenience stores, and some sign-up pages are in Japanese only. JNTO’s free “Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect” app registers you once for many trusted networks.
  • 5G comes and goes. In the first half of 2026, phones on Japan’s four networks spent roughly 37–51% of their connected time on 5G. Expect to switch to 4G often, especially outside city centres.
  • Transit card on your phone. iPhone users can add JR East’s Welcome Suica Mobile to Apple Wallet and top it up from the phone; it is valid for 180 days. It is not available on Android.
  • Translate offline too. Download Japanese in Google Translate on Wi-Fi before you fly, so menus and signs can still be translated in deep tunnels or remote areas without signal.

Install Safety tips, a free disaster alert app for visitors to Japan. It sends notifications for Earthquake Early Warnings and for tsunami, volcanic, weather and heat illness warnings, plus civil protection alerts, in English, Chinese, Korean and other languages. You can pick up to five locations in Japan or let it use GPS. Alerts arrive over the internet, so keep mobile data on and allow notifications for the app.

00000JAPAN is a free emergency Wi-Fi network that Japanese carriers, public Wi-Fi operators and local governments open after major disasters and, since September 2023, also during large-scale mobile outages. If your phone loses signal in an emergency, look for the network name 00000JAPAN: it is open and free to join. The connection is not encrypted, so use it to check news and contact family, and avoid entering passwords or card details.

Mostly, during the summer climbing season. Docomo lists 4G along the Yoshida, Subashiri, Gotemba and Fujinomiya trails year-round, and 5G and 4G on part of the summit and at mountain huts from early July to late August 2026. SoftBank also installs 5G and 4G equipment at the summit each season. Summit coverage reaches only part of the crater rim and can slow down when crowded, so save maps and hut bookings before you start.
