Using mobile data in France: local tips

  • Signal on the Métro. The Paris Métro has 4G in stations and tunnels on all four French networks. RER coverage varies by operator, and some tunnels still have gaps.
  • No tap-to-pay at most gates yet. You can’t tap a bank card or phone wallet at most Paris Métro/RER gates yet. Contactless validation rolls out line by line from 2027. Buy tickets in the official app instead.
  • Tickets on your phone. The official Île-de-France Mobilités app sells Paris transport tickets that you can store on an iPhone XR or later (iOS 17.5+) and validate at the gates. It also shows live departures and disruption alerts.
  • TGV Wi-Fi rides on mobile networks. Free Wi-Fi on TGV INOUI trains uses the same 4G/5G networks, so it drops where coverage is weak and the bandwidth is shared. Download films and maps before boarding.
  • Paris Wi-Fi is limited. The city’s free Paris Wi-Fi works only in municipal places such as parks, libraries and museums, from 7am to midnight, in two-hour sessions.
  • Check coverage before mountain trips. Before heading into the mountains or countryside, check ARCEP’s official “Mon réseau mobile” map for coverage and measured quality by operator.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

France's FR-Alert system warns people in an area facing a serious danger, such as a flood, wildfire or industrial accident. There's no app or sign-up: the government says alerts reach every mobile phone in the zone as long as it's connected to the network, whatever phone you use, and they appear even on a locked screen, often with a loud sound and vibration. A phone that's switched off or in airplane mode won't get them. In busy tourist areas, alerts may be sent in several languages.

Switzerland isn't in the EU, so EU roaming rules don't cover it, and whether your data works there depends on the countries listed in your plan. Near the Swiss border your phone can also latch onto a Swiss network while you're still in France, because it picks the strongest signal. France's National Consumer Institute (INC) recommends selecting the network manually in your phone settings so you stay on a French operator.

Near the coast your phone uses land networks, but out at sea there are no antennas. France's National Consumer Institute explains that your phone may then connect to the ship's own satellite-linked network, which is often expensive and usually not included in mobile plans; ship networks can only take over beyond 2 nautical miles from shore. Download films and maps before boarding, and keep an eye on the network name shown on your phone during the crossing.

Many SNCF stations, including Paris Gare de Lyon, have free Wi-Fi run by SNCF Gares & Connexions. Without signing up, you get a 20-minute low-speed session and can reconnect when it ends. For unlimited high-speed access of up to 20 Mb/s, create a free account with your name, email and a password. Coverage is inside the station buildings, not on platforms, underpasses or the forecourt, so connect in the hall before a long train ride.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.

Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.

Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.

eSIM plans for France connect via Orange. Your device automatically selects the strongest local network; 5G is available where supported by the carrier, otherwise 4G/LTE applies. The specific carrier for each plan is listed on its detail page.

High-speed data is prioritized; after your daily allowance is used, speeds are reduced but remain sufficient for messaging, maps, and social media. You’ll never lose connectivity.

This data eSIM doesn’t include a phone number. You can still make calls and send messages normally using apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger.
