France's FR-Alert system warns people in an area facing a serious danger, such as a flood, wildfire or industrial accident. There's no app or sign-up: the government says alerts reach every mobile phone in the zone as long as it's connected to the network, whatever phone you use, and they appear even on a locked screen, often with a loud sound and vibration. A phone that's switched off or in airplane mode won't get them. In busy tourist areas, alerts may be sent in several languages.
Switzerland isn't in the EU, so EU roaming rules don't cover it, and whether your data works there depends on the countries listed in your plan. Near the Swiss border your phone can also latch onto a Swiss network while you're still in France, because it picks the strongest signal. France's National Consumer Institute (INC) recommends selecting the network manually in your phone settings so you stay on a French operator.
Near the coast your phone uses land networks, but out at sea there are no antennas. France's National Consumer Institute explains that your phone may then connect to the ship's own satellite-linked network, which is often expensive and usually not included in mobile plans; ship networks can only take over beyond 2 nautical miles from shore. Download films and maps before boarding, and keep an eye on the network name shown on your phone during the crossing.
Many SNCF stations, including Paris Gare de Lyon, have free Wi-Fi run by SNCF Gares & Connexions. Without signing up, you get a 20-minute low-speed session and can reconnect when it ends. For unlimited high-speed access of up to 20 Mb/s, create a free account with your name, email and a password. Coverage is inside the station buildings, not on platforms, underpasses or the forecourt, so connect in the hall before a long train ride.
