Using mobile data in Canada: local tips

  • Icefields Parkway has no signal. Parks Canada says the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper has no cell coverage. Download offline maps and trip information before leaving town.
  • Banff beyond the townsite. Icefields Parkway campgrounds have no cell coverage, and coverage along the Bow Valley Parkway is limited: don’t count on data once you leave Banff or Lake Louise.
  • Long highway dead zones. CRTC figures show around 15,000 km of Canada’s major roads have no mobile service, including about a third of British Columbia’s. Save offline maps before road trips.
  • Coverage between Yukon towns. Every Yukon community has cell coverage, but highways and wilderness don’t: expect hours without signal when driving between towns.
  • Toronto subway. Every TTC subway station has cell service, but many tunnel sections are still being connected: download what you need before boarding.
  • Tap your card on the TTC. Tap a credit card or phone wallet at PRESTO readers to pay on Toronto’s TTC, with a free two-hour transfer. Regular foreign debit cards aren’t accepted.
  • Satellite SOS on newer iPhones. In areas with no cell or Wi-Fi signal, an iPhone 14 or later can use Emergency SOS via satellite in Canada, independent of your data plan.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

Yes. The STM finished installing a 4G LTE network in December 2020 that covers all 68 metro stations and the tunnels between them, so data keeps working on the trains as well as on the platforms. The network was funded jointly by Bell, Rogers, Telus and Videotron, so an eSIM that connects through one of those networks should have signal underground.

On some routes. VIA Rail offers free Wi-Fi on most trains in the Québec City to Windsor corridor, which includes Montréal, Ottawa and Toronto, plus its Business lounges and select stations; on board, join "VIA_WiFi_VIDEO". The Ocean between Montréal and Halifax has Wi-Fi in the cars on either side of the dining car. On other routes, such as Toronto to Vancouver, plan to use your own data and download entertainment beforehand.

Yes. At Toronto Pearson, choose "Toronto Pearson Public Wi-Fi", accept the terms on the landing page and tap Connect; if the page doesn't appear, open any website to bring it up. At Vancouver (YVR), the free network is "@yvrairport". Both are useful if you still need to install or activate your eSIM after landing. Double-check the exact network name before you connect.

Possibly, but don't rely on it alone. Canada's Alert Ready system pushes life-threatening emergency alerts to compatible phones on LTE networks in the affected area, alongside TV and radio. Alert Ready lists three conditions: the device supports wireless public alerting, runs the latest software, and is connected to LTE when the alert is issued or while it's still active. Update your phone before the trip, keep cellular switched on, and check local news if conditions look risky.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.

Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.

Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.

eSIM plans for Canada connect via Telus, Bell, SaskTel, Rogers Wireless. Your device automatically selects the strongest local network; 5G is available where supported by the carrier, otherwise 4G/LTE applies. The specific carrier for each plan is listed on its detail page.

High-speed data is prioritized; after your daily allowance is used, speeds are reduced but remain sufficient for messaging, maps, and social media. You’ll never lose connectivity.

This data eSIM doesn’t include a phone number. You can still make calls and send messages normally using apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger.
