Using mobile data in Cambodia: local tips

  • 5G in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Metfone and Cellcard have 5G in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap; elsewhere, expect 4G.
  • Check coverage before remote trips. Cellcard’s coverage map shows 4G by area and notes that some places still lack coverage: check before heading off the main routes.
  • Grab without a local number. Grab says you don’t need a Cambodian number to register: set up your account and link a card before you travel.
  • Angkor by app. In Siem Reap, Grab offers car and remorque (tuk-tuk) rentals with a driver for Angkor’s Small and Grand Circuits, bookable only in the app.
  • Pay by KHQR as a tourist. You can sign up for the National Bank’s Bakong Tourists app with a code sent by email, so a data-only eSIM is enough. After passport verification, you can pay at KHQR merchants.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

Yes. Smart sells its Traveller SIM at its booth in every international airport in Cambodia, and Smart eSIM can be bought in the SmartNas app, on its website or in a Smart Shop. Either way you need ID: Cambodia's telecom regulator requires operators to check valid identification before activating any SIM, so the eSIM purchase asks you to scan your passport and complete a face check.

Usually not, but there is one case to know. Cambodia's immigration department uses the FPCS app to register where foreigners stay. Hotels, guesthouses and landlords register you themselves, but if you stay with friends or family you must register yourself, and the UK government notes that a Cambodian phone number is needed for the registration to be valid. Skipping it may stop you extending your visa. A data-only eSIM will not give you that number.

Not everywhere. The UK government's travel advice says Cambodia's main cities and towns have good Wi-Fi and mobile networks, but many islands and remote areas are not well covered. Before taking a boat out to the islands or heading deep into the countryside, download offline maps and your booking details, and let friends or family know you may be out of contact for a while.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.

Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.

Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.

eSIM plans for Cambodia connect via Metfone, Cellcard on 4G/LTE networks. Your device automatically selects the strongest local network. The carrier for each plan is listed on its detail page.

High-speed data is prioritized; after your daily allowance is used, speeds are reduced but remain sufficient for messaging, maps, and social media. You’ll never lose connectivity.
