Using mobile data in United States: local tips

  • Coverage in national parks is patchy. Cell service in US national parks can drop even where carrier maps show coverage. Check the park’s “Basic Information” page before you go.
  • Yellowstone especially. Service in Yellowstone is extremely limited and mostly around developed areas; summer crowds can overload it so that data stops working.
  • Save park info offline. Download the official NPS App and save your park’s content for offline use on strong Wi-Fi before heading somewhere remote.
  • Offline directions are for driving only. Google Maps offline areas give driving directions, but walking, transit and live traffic still need data. Update offline areas before they expire.
  • Fastest 5G is in cities. Verizon’s fastest 5G (Ultra Wideband) is concentrated in cities; elsewhere you will usually be on 4G LTE or standard 5G.
  • Keep your home line for codes. Uber and Lyft verify your number by SMS. Keep your home line active on your dual-SIM phone for texts and use the eSIM for data. This eSIM has no US number.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

Probably not. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile switched off their 3G networks in 2022, and the FCC specifically warned international visitors with 3G phones to plan ahead. Phones that only support 3G can't get data or make calls, and some older 4G phones without VoLTE can't make calls either, including to 911. If your phone supports 4G LTE or 5G, eSIM data works normally.

In stations, yes: the MTA says all 281 underground subway stations have cell service and Wi-Fi. Between stations it's patchier. The plan to wire all 418 track miles of tunnels is being rolled out segment by segment: the L train tunnel under the East River was the first fully connected, and stretches of lines such as the 4/5 and G have been added since. Load maps and messages on the platform before you ride.

Yes. JFK, LaGuardia and Newark offer unlimited free Wi-Fi; at JFK, just select the "Free JFK WiFi" network. LAX has free Wi-Fi in the public areas of all terminals, in 45-minute sessions that begin after a short ad, and you can start a new session as often as you like. That's handy if you still need to download or activate your eSIM after landing.

Only for light browsing. Amtrak offers free basic Wi-Fi on select trains and in some stations, but because bandwidth on board is limited, it doesn't support streaming music or video or downloading large files. On a long train trip, keep your eSIM data on for anything heavier, and download films, playlists or big work files before you board.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.

Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.

Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.

eSIM plans for United States connect via Verizon, AT&T. Your device automatically selects the strongest local network; 5G is available where supported by the carrier, otherwise 4G/LTE applies. The specific carrier for each plan is listed on its detail page.

High-speed data is prioritized; after your daily allowance is used, speeds are reduced but remain sufficient for messaging, maps, and social media. You’ll never lose connectivity.

This data eSIM doesn’t include a phone number. You can still make calls and send messages normally using apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger.
