Using mobile data in South Korea: local tips

  • Use a Korean map app. Google Maps has long lacked full walking and driving directions in South Korea. Install Naver Map or KakaoMap before you arrive. They are what locals use.
  • Naver Map works in English. Naver Map has an English interface with live transit departure times and alerts telling you when to get on and off. Live updates need an internet connection.
  • Papago for menus and signs. Naver’s Papago translates text in photos and handles two-way voice conversations. Text translation also works offline if the signal drops.
  • Taxis without a Korean number. Kakao Mobility’s k.ride app is built for visitors: sign up with Google, Apple or email and pay with a card issued abroad.
  • Expect dips on some rail sections. Korean 5G is very fast overall, but government tests found weaker 5G on subway lines and some KTX/SRT sections, so connections may slow down on those routes.
  • Help over data. Korea’s official 1330 Travel Helpline can be reached by chat through KakaoTalk, Line, Facebook or its own messenger: no Korean phone number needed.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

Yes. The Seoul city government runs free Wi-Fi at bus stops, on city and village buses, in parks, traditional markets, main streets and tourist sites. Choose "SEOUL_Secure" and type "seoul" as both the ID and password; after that one login, your phone reconnects automatically wherever the network is available. The open "SEOUL" network needs no login, but you have to tap the connect button each time.

Usually, yes. KakaoTalk accepts numbers from 230 country codes: choose your country and enter your number without the code. To verify, Kakao may ask you to send a text from your phone, so your home plan must allow sending SMS abroad. Virtual and internet phone numbers aren't accepted. A data eSIM has no Korean number, so register before the trip while your own SIM is active, and avoid repeated attempts, which can restrict your account.

For the summit, yes. Reaching Baengnokdam via the Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa trails requires an advance booking on the official Hallasan reservation site (visithalla.jeju.go.kr), which has an English version. The QR code arrives by email, and every hiker must show their own QR code plus ID such as a passport. Save the email or a screenshot before you set off so you aren't relying on signal at the trailhead. Trails such as Eorimok and Yeongsil need no booking.

Government disaster alerts sent to phones in Korea are written in Korean, now with a short English keyword such as "Earthquake". For fuller help, install the Emergency Ready App from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. In English, it shows nearby shelters, emergency medical centres, police and fire stations, CPR and first-aid guides, and a direct 119 call button. The ministry also uses it to deliver disaster alerts to foreigners.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.

Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.

Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.
