Japan Daily eSIM: Never Run Out of Data

Daily-renewing data plan for your Japan trip: choose 500MB–10GB high-speed data per day and the exact number of days you need (1–30 days). Once your daily high-speed allowance is exhausted, speeds are reduced: maps and messaging still work, unlike fixed-data plans where connectivity drops entirely.

Using mobile data in Japan: local tips

  • Signal underground. Tokyo’s subway lines carry mobile voice and data in the tunnels as well as the stations, so maps and messaging keep working between stops.
  • Shinkansen Wi-Fi is limited. Free Wi-Fi on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen disconnects every 30 minutes and can be slow in crowded or remote sections: use mobile data for anything that needs a steady connection.
  • Free Wi-Fi is fragmented. Wi-Fi sign-up varies between stations, airports and convenience stores, and some sign-up pages are in Japanese only. JNTO’s free “Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect” app registers you once for many trusted networks.
  • 5G comes and goes. In the first half of 2026, phones on Japan’s four networks spent roughly 37–51% of their connected time on 5G. Expect to switch to 4G often, especially outside city centres.
  • Transit card on your phone. iPhone users can add JR East’s Welcome Suica Mobile to Apple Wallet and top it up from the phone; it is valid for 180 days. It is not available on Android.
  • Translate offline too. Download Japanese in Google Translate on Wi-Fi before you fly, so menus and signs can still be translated in deep tunnels or remote areas without signal.

FAQ

Depends on your chosen plan: 500MB/day → 256 Kbps; 1GB/day → 1 Mbps; 2GB/day → 1 Mbps; 3GB/day → 1 Mbps; 5GB/day → 384 Kbps; 10GB/day → 384 Kbps. After that, you stay connected until your daily high-speed allowance resets.

eSIM plans for Japan connect via NTT Docomo, Rakuten Mobile, KDDI (au), SoftBank. Your device automatically selects the strongest local network; 5G is available where supported by the carrier, otherwise 4G/LTE applies. The specific carrier for each plan is listed on its detail page.

Daily plans provide a fixed amount of high-speed data refreshed each day (e.g., 1 GB/day). Once the daily high-speed limit is reached, speeds are reduced but connectivity remains. The full high-speed allowance resets the next day. Fixed-data plans end completely once exhausted; additional data must be purchased.

Essentially similar to "unlimited" plans on the market: you always stay connected, but speeds are reduced after exceeding your daily high-speed data allowance. We clearly state the reduced speed for each plan so you can choose the right one. No vague marketing.

Select the exact number of days for your trip, from 1 to 30 days. Pricing is per day: travel for 5 days, pay for 5 days. No need to overbuy a 30-day package.

1 GB/day is enough for maps, messaging, and social media. 2–3 GB/day if you frequently watch videos or make video calls. 5–10 GB/day for livestreaming or sharing a hotspot with your group.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.
