Using mobile data in Vietnam: local tips
- 5G in cities, 4G beyond. Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone all run commercial 5G, and Viettel reports 5G in every province. Outside city centres, expect your phone to use 4G.
- Ha Long Bay has dead zones. Limestone islands block signal in parts of the bay, and tour boats still lose coverage in some areas. Download tickets and maps before boarding.
- Trekking in the far north. Almost every village now has mobile signal, but a few remote hamlets in the northern mountains still do not — carry offline maps on trekking and loop routes.
- Zalo needs SMS verification. Many hotels and small businesses use Zalo. Signing up requires a code sent by SMS, so keep a SIM that can receive texts — this data-only eSIM has no number.
- Paying by QR code. Visitors from China, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia can scan Vietnamese QR codes with some home banking or wallet apps.
- Offline translation. Download Vietnamese in Google Translate before you travel so menus and signs can be translated where there is no signal.
