What can I still do in Japan after using up my 3GB high-speed data allowance?
3GB high-speed data ≈ 9.8 hours of 360p video or 2.7 hours of 720p HD video (estimated using YouTube’s recommended bitrates). Once exhausted, speeds will be reduced to 256 Kbps – 1 Mbps (depending on the number of days you select) until your daily allowance resets:
- Message WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger
- Email and Google Maps navigation
- Voice calls via apps (may be unstable)
- Watch videos and scroll Reels/TikTok (very slow downloads)
- Video calls

Using mobile data in Japan: local tips
- Signal underground. Tokyo’s subway lines carry mobile voice and data in the tunnels as well as the stations, so maps and messaging keep working between stops.
- Shinkansen Wi-Fi is limited. Free Wi-Fi on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen disconnects every 30 minutes and can be slow in crowded or remote sections — use mobile data for anything that needs a steady connection.
- Free Wi-Fi is fragmented. Wi-Fi sign-up varies between stations, airports and convenience stores, and some sign-up pages are in Japanese only. JNTO’s free “Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect” app registers you once for many trusted networks.
- 5G comes and goes. In the first half of 2026, phones on Japan’s four networks spent roughly 37–51% of their connected time on 5G. Expect to switch to 4G often, especially outside city centres.
- Transit card on your phone. iPhone users can add JR East’s Welcome Suica Mobile to Apple Wallet and top it up from the phone; it is valid for 180 days. It is not available on Android.
- Translate offline too. Download Japanese in Google Translate on Wi-Fi before you fly, so menus and signs can still be translated in deep tunnels or remote areas without signal.
