New Zealand Daily eSIM: Never Run Out of Data

Daily-renewing data plan for your New Zealand trip: choose 500MB–10GB high-speed data per day and the exact number of days you need (1–30 days). Once your daily high-speed allowance is exhausted, speeds are reduced: maps and messaging still work, unlike fixed-data plans where connectivity drops entirely.

Using mobile data in New Zealand: local tips

  • Little coverage in the outdoors. The NZ Mountain Safety Council says most outdoor regions have no mobile service, and coverage elsewhere is patchy. Carry a personal locator beacon (they can be hired) and tell someone your plans.
  • Milford Road. Coverage is limited once you leave Te Anau, so load maps and bookings there. Along the road there are only card-phones and an emergency satellite phone at Homer Tunnel.
  • Great Walks can be offline. The Milford Track has no cellphone coverage at all. DOC advises carrying a distress beacon and your booking confirmation.
  • 3G-only phones no longer connect. One NZ switched off 2G and 3G in March 2026, so phones that only support 3G can no longer use its network.
  • 5G in the main centres. One NZ 5G is live in parts of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and other centres; most rural areas are 4G.
  • Pay by card on Auckland transport. Auckland buses, trains and most ferries accept contactless cards and phone wallets: tag on and off. Cards issued overseas may incur a small fee.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

Depends on your chosen plan: 500MB/day → 512 Kbps; 1GB/day → 1 Mbps; 2GB/day → 512 Kbps; 3GB/day → 512 Kbps; 10GB/day → 384 Kbps. After that, you stay connected until your daily high-speed allowance resets.

eSIM plans for New Zealand connect via One NZ. Your device automatically selects the strongest local network; 5G is available where supported by the carrier, otherwise 4G/LTE applies. The specific carrier for each plan is listed on its detail page.

Daily plans provide a fixed amount of high-speed data refreshed each day (e.g., 1 GB/day). Once the daily high-speed limit is reached, speeds are reduced but connectivity remains. The full high-speed allowance resets the next day. Fixed-data plans end completely once exhausted; additional data must be purchased.

Essentially similar to "unlimited" plans on the market: you always stay connected, but speeds are reduced after exceeding your daily high-speed data allowance. We clearly state the reduced speed for each plan so you can choose the right one. No vague marketing.

Select the exact number of days for your trip, from 1 to 30 days. Pricing is per day: travel for 5 days, pay for 5 days. No need to overbuy a 30-day package.

1 GB/day is enough for maps, messaging, and social media. 2–3 GB/day if you frequently watch videos or make video calls. 5–10 GB/day for livestreaming or sharing a hotspot with your group.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.
