Using mobile data in Malaysia: local tips

  • Two 5G networks now. Since July 2026, U Mobile has run its own 5G network, while Maxis and CelcomDigi use the national DNB network. Coverage can differ by provider.
  • Coverage thins out in Sarawak. 5G reaches almost all populated areas of Putrajaya but only about 59% of populated areas in Sarawak. In interior Sabah and Sarawak expect gaps along rivers and highland roads: download offline maps first.
  • Touch ’n Go eWallet for visitors. Eligible tourists can sign up for the Touch ’n Go eWallet with their home number (the code arrives by WhatsApp, so it works over data) and pay at DuitNow QR stalls. Check eligibility in the app.
  • Scan with your home app. Visitors from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, China and Cambodia can scan Malaysia’s DuitNow QR codes with participating banking or wallet apps from home.
  • KL rail gates need a card or token. Rapid KL LRT, MRT and monorail gates accept only a Touch ’n Go card or a token for now. Bank cards and phone wallets don’t work at the gates yet.
  • Plan trips in MyRapid PULSE. Prasarana’s official MyRapid PULSE app plans journeys across KL rail and buses with real-time updates and service alerts.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

Yes. Grab says you can create an account without a local number, so you can sign up with your home number before you fly and add a card for payment. Once you land, your eSIM gives you the data to book rides, track your driver and chat in the app. Keep your home line switched on in case you need to receive a verification code.

Not unless your plan includes Singapore. Singapore is a separate country with its own networks, so a Malaysia-only eSIM won't give you data once you cross the Causeway. Malaysian operator CelcomDigi even sells a separate pass for this trip and tells users to pick the network manually in phone settings so the phone doesn't switch to another operator by itself. Check your plan's coverage before heading across.

No. Malaysia's communications regulator, MCMC, set 31 December 2021 as the date the country's 3G network was fully shut down, so the spectrum could be reused to strengthen 4G. Mobile data now runs on 4G LTE and 5G, so a phone that only supports 3G won't get data. Most smartphones from recent years are fine; just make sure 4G/LTE is switched on in your settings.

For a local prepaid SIM, yes. Every prepaid SIM in Malaysia must be registered, and under MCMC's new mandatory standard registered in February 2026, a non-citizen's passport is verified biometrically, each person can hold at most two prepaid SIMs per operator, and tourist SIMs are cut off after three months at most. Bring your original passport to the counter. A travel eSIM is installed from a QR code before you fly, so there's no SIM counter to visit.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.

Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.

Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.

eSIM plans for Malaysia connect via Maxis, CelcomDigi. Your device automatically selects the strongest local network; 5G is available where supported by the carrier, otherwise 4G/LTE applies. The specific carrier for each plan is listed on its detail page.

High-speed data is prioritized; after your daily allowance is used, speeds are reduced but remain sufficient for messaging, maps, and social media. You’ll never lose connectivity.

This data eSIM doesn’t include a phone number. You can still make calls and send messages normally using apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger.
