Using mobile data in Indonesia: local tips

  • No IMEI registration on a foreign line. According to Indonesian Customs, visitors staying up to 90 days who connect as roamers on a foreign SIM don’t need to register their phone’s IMEI. Registration applies if you buy an Indonesian SIM.
  • Nusa Penida has gaps. Indonesia’s communications minister said in 2026 that parts of Nusa Penida still have no signal, while Nusa Lembongan is well covered: download maps and bookings before crossing.
  • Coverage between Raja Ampat’s islands. Telkomsel is still upgrading signal at Raja Ampat tourist spots such as Pianemo and Arborek, so expect patchy or no data between islands.
  • 5G in South Bali. Telkomsel’s 5G in Bali is concentrated around Kuta–Canggu, Nusa Dua and Sanur; elsewhere on the island expect 4G.
  • Pay QRIS with your home banking app. Visitors from Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and China can pay at QRIS merchants with their home banking or payment apps.
  • Sign up for Gojek at home. Gojek rejects virtual and VoIP numbers, so register with your real home mobile number, ideally before you leave. This eSIM has no Indonesian number.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

All Indonesia is the government's official platform for digital arrival reporting, including customs requirements. You can fill it in up to three days before you land, on a phone or laptop, and Indonesia's tourism site advises doing it before departure day with a stable internet connection, then saving the proof or a screenshot. Since 16 October 2026, travellers who have filed the declaration also get a link to book Whoosh high-speed train tickets to Bandung or Karawang.

International tourists visiting Bali pay a levy, set under a 2025 provincial regulation, through the official Love Bali site (lovebali.baliprov.go.id). You enter your name, passport number, email and arrival date, then pay by bank transfer, virtual account or QRIS. The voucher arrives by email as a QR code, so use an address you can check on the go and keep it saved on your phone. A "Resend Voucher" page helps if it doesn't show up.

As a backup, yes. Indonesia's official tourism site says most international airports offer Wi-Fi, including Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta in Terminals 1 and 2, and that major city hotels usually give guests free Wi-Fi with a password at check-in. Malls, cafés and attractions often have hotspots too, but the site warns these aren't always secured networks, so avoid banking or important logins on them.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.

Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.

Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.
