Not without a licence. Indian missions warn that bringing in or using satellite phones such as Thuraya or Iridium without prior permission is illegal under the Indian Wireless and Telegraph Acts. Anyone carrying one must declare it to Customs on arrival and show the permission. Unauthorised sets are seized and users can be prosecuted, so leave it at home and rely on mobile data instead.
Don't count on them. In June 2020 India's IT ministry blocked 59 apps under Section 69A of the IT Act, including TikTok, WeChat, Weibo, UC Browser, SHAREit and CamScanner. If friends or family usually reach you on WeChat, agree on another messaging app and test it before you fly, so you're not stuck sorting it out on arrival.
Delhi airport's "GMR FREE WIFI" sends a login code by SMS to an Indian mobile number. Without one, go to an Information Desk or a self-service Wi-Fi kiosk, scan or show your passport, and you'll get a coupon code. Enter your KYC ID and that code on the login page to get free Wi-Fi. A data eSIM that's already active saves you the queue.
Indian operators ask foreign visitors for a passport and valid visa, and Vi also requires a local reference who provides their own supporting documents, not just a self-declaration. Airtel says a foreign national's number is only valid until the visa expires. Expect paperwork and some waiting at the store, which is why many visitors sort out an eSIM before they fly.
Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.
Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.
For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.
Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.

High-speed data is prioritized; after your daily allowance is used, speeds are reduced but remain sufficient for messaging, maps, and social media. You’ll never lose connectivity.
