Using mobile data in Germany: local tips

  • 5G covers most, not all. O2 and Vodafone each covered about three-quarters of Germany’s land area with 5G in late 2025. Expect 4G in rural stretches.
  • Check the official coverage map. Before a rural drive or hike, check the Bundesnetzagentur’s coverage map. It shows 4G and 5G separately for O2 and Vodafone, including dead spots.
  • On ICE trains. Train windows block a lot of signal, so Deutsche Bahn fits repeaters in all ICE trains. Free WIFIonICE shares its bandwidth among passengers, so performance varies and large downloads are discouraged.
  • Berlin’s U-Bahn is covered. All nine Berlin U-Bahn lines and their 175 stations have 4G in the tunnels as well as on platforms.
  • Deutschlandticket is a subscription. The Deutschlandticket is a digital monthly subscription that renews automatically: cancel by the 10th of the month if you don’t want the next month. It covers local and regional transport, not ICE, IC or EC trains.
  • Carry some cash. In 2025 cash was still used for 45% of purchases in Germany, and card or phone payment wasn’t possible for about one in seven in-store purchases.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

You can, but not anonymously. German telecom law requires prepaid providers to collect your name, address and date of birth and to verify your identity before the line is activated. A passport is an accepted document, checked in person or through another approved procedure. Allow time for this step, because the SIM won't work until the check is done.

There is one worth trying. nora is the official emergency app of the German federal states. It sends your location to the control centre and lets you reach police, fire or ambulance without speaking, and even a slow EDGE connection is enough. The app is in German and English. You register with a mobile number verified by SMS, and the official site does not say whether foreign numbers are accepted, so try it before you travel. Calling 112 always works.

Don't assume it does. The EU's roam-like-at-home rules cover EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, so neighbours like Austria, France and the Netherlands are included, but Switzerland is not. If you plan to visit Basel, Zurich or the Swiss shore of Lake Constance, check that your data plan lists Switzerland, or turn off data roaming until you are back in Germany.

Yes. Munich Airport offers a free network called "Free Wifi - Munich Airport". Select it, enter an email address and accept the terms, and you're online. It's a handy backup if you still need to finish setting up your eSIM, download offline maps or message your hotel before heading into the city.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.
