Using mobile data in Australia: local tips

  • The outback has long gaps. Australia’s networks cover only part of its land: by Telstra’s figures, Optus (which this eSIM uses) covers about 1.2 million km² versus Telstra’s 2.1 million. Expect long stretches with no signal on outback drives.
  • Check the Optus map for your route. Optus’s official coverage map shows predicted outdoor coverage under the 2026 national standard. Indoor signal may be weaker.
  • Uluṟu and Kata Tjuṯa. Ayers Rock Resort has coverage from all networks, but inside the national park signal is patchy, with black spots around Kata Tjuṯa. Download maps before you go.
  • Check your phone works here. Australia’s 3G networks are off, and phones that can’t call 000 over 4G VoLTE are blocked, including some imported models. Check your phone with Optus’s device checker first.
  • Emergency calls. Dial 000 or 112 on the keypad. The call is free and your phone will try any available network. Messaging apps can’t reach 000.
  • Tap your card in Sydney. On Sydney’s Opal network, tap on and off with a contactless card or phone wallet for the same fares and daily caps: no Opal card needed.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Services and coverage change: check the app or operator before you travel.

FAQ

Yes. At the international terminal (T1), choose "Sydney Airport Free WiFi", answer a few questions and accept the terms, and you'll see a short sponsored message before you get online. The airport points out that the network isn't encrypted, so stick to secure https sites for banking, email or social media, and treat it as a handy backup on arrival rather than your main connection.

Don't count on it. Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service says mobile range can't be relied on in remote areas and strongly recommends carrying a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). You can hire one on weekdays from Service Tasmania shops in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport, or from the Cradle Mountain, Lake St Clair and Mount Field visitor centres, which have limited stock and take no reservations. Carry a printed map as well.

Yes. Emergency+ is the official free app from Australia's emergency services and government partners. It uses your phone's GPS and shows a what3words address, three words for a 3-metre square, that you can read out to the Triple Zero (000) operator. what3words addressing works offline, but the call itself still needs mobile coverage. The app also lists the SES and Police Assistance Line for help that isn't urgent.

Yes. Install your eSIM before departure; once you land, simply enable data roaming to connect instantly at the airport.

Most iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM. You can check in your device’s Settings.

For most plans, validity starts from the first time your eSIM connects to a network at your destination. You can safely install it at home before flying. Exact details for each plan are clearly stated on its product page.

Most plans allow topping up data or extending validity: supported plans are clearly marked on the plan card and on the product page. You can also purchase a new plan anytime; the QR code is emailed to you within minutes.

eSIM plans for Australia connect via Optus. Your device automatically selects the strongest local network; 5G is available where supported by the carrier, otherwise 4G/LTE applies. The specific carrier for each plan is listed on its detail page.

High-speed data is prioritized; after your daily allowance is used, speeds are reduced but remain sufficient for messaging, maps, and social media. You’ll never lose connectivity.

This data eSIM doesn’t include a phone number. You can still make calls and send messages normally using apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger.
